The Board
The Land Surveyors' Licensing Board of Western Australia is constituted under Section 4 of the Licensed Surveyors’ Act, 1909–1976.

The Board consists of six members comprising the Surveyor General ex officio, two members nominated by the Surveyor General, two members nominated by the Institution of Surveyors Australia, WA Division and one member nominated by an education institution.

Charter and Objectives of the Board
The Board's Charter is to provide for the registration regulation and supervision of persons who undertake surveys and to assist the profession in the control of matters incidental thereto.

The Objectives of the Board are:

1. To promote the provision of sound education requirements for the profession coupled with continuing assessment.

  • To monitor the performance, training and continuing education of surveyors and those persons subject to the requirements of the Board prior to registration (the candidates).
  • To conduct examinations and maintain acceptable levels of assessment of a candidate’s, or a registered surveyor’s ability and competence to service the community’s surveying needs.to maintain an awareness of advances in surveying technology and to implement changes to educational requirements and assessment procedures as necessary.

2. To maintain reciprocity between the States and Territories of Australia and certain other countries and provide a Licensing or Registration structure for those persons involved in authorised surveys.

  • To maintain reciprocal arrangements for registered surveyors within the States, Territories and New Zealand.
  • To monitor trends in surveying in Australian States, Territories and New Zealand.
  • To issue a certificate of competency to successful candidates and to license registered surveyors from reciprocating States, Territories and Countries in accordance with the Act.
  • To maintain a register of those persons licensed to practice surveying.
  • To issue practising certificates in accordance with the Act.
  • To maintain a register of those surveyors who are holders of a current practising certificate

3. To provide a means of administering discipline in cases of breaches of the Act in accordance with relevant sections of the Act.

4. To ensure sound liaison with Government.

  • To advise the Minister on all matters pertaining to the training, licensing and continuing education of surveyors engaged in Western Australia.
  • To liaise with the Chief Executive Officer of the Department of Land Information and his senior officers in matters relating to the performance of surveys, the standards required for such surveys and the maintenance of those standards.

5. To ensure sound liaison with Industry.

  • To maintain an awareness of the community’s needs for surveying services.
  • To maintain an awareness of the community’s attitude and reactions to the performance of those surveyors undertaking surveys.
  • To maintain an awareness of all Acts Regulations and guidelines etc. concerning surveys and related matters.
